If you made it past the dated movie reference, then congratulations. You win some Venus flytrap knowledge nuggets.
Nugget 1: These carnivorous wonders are not only cool, but rare too. Flytraps have been introduced to other areas outside their original habitat, but their natural range is North Carolina and a small section of South Carolina.
Nugget 2: They get most of their energy through photosynthesis, but they also famously get some of their nutrients from digesting insects too. An insect will crawl across the leaves, brushing against tiny hairs that trigger a response for the leaves to snap shut. Boom! Lunch is served.
Nugget 3: Venus flytraps do have some threats, the biggest of which is habitat loss and poaching. You can help keep these insect-munching friends safe by not buying poached flytraps.

Hidden Wildlife Month is quickly coming to a close... which leaves us just enough time to return to the enigmatic eastern hellbender!🐉🦎
🔹 Size Matters: Standing out as the largest salamander in the state and one of only three giant salamanders worldwide, these hellbenders are true behemoths. With an average length of 16-17 inches and sometimes weighing over three pounds, encountering one is a rare treat. They've mastered the art of disguise, thanks to their dark, mud-like skin, which camouflages them perfectly from predators and unsuspecting prey. 🌿🎭
🔹 Age-Defying: Hellbenders boast impressive longevity, living much longer than most wildlife species. It's not uncommon for an eastern hellbender to thrive for at least 30 years, adding to their mystique and importance in the ecosystem. 🕰️🍃
🔹 River Dwellers: These remarkable creatures make their homes in rivers and large streams with clean, clear, and fast-moving water that's rich in oxygen. 🌊💨 To set up their nests and protect themselves from predators, they rely on large, flat rocks and submerged trees. If their preferred rocks aren't available, they cleverly utilize holes in stream banks as an alternative sanctuary. 🏠🌳
🔹 Culinary Choices: While crayfish are the staple of their diet, hellbenders may occasionally indulge in a fishy meal. However, contrary to popular belief, their impact on fish populations is minimal, and they pose no threat to the quality of trout fisheries. 🦞🐟

Sometimes it's hard to be a serious and professional science agency when amphibians like the northern red salamander exist. Our first caption was, "LOOK AT THIS PERFECT SMOL NUGGET! HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANYTHING MORE PERFECT IN YOUR WHOLE LIFE?!?!?! LOOK AT THEM DO THEIR PUSHY UPPIES!
We composed ourselves, took a deep breath and rewrote our caption to something more professional. Ok, for real this time, "Hear ye! Hear ya! Behold the northern red salamander. This stunning amphibian can be found throughout the eastern United States. Red salamanders are good indicators of stream health because they are very sensitive to stream erosion and pollution.

Did you know a bison calf is called a "red dog"? This red dog was spotted just over a week ago. If you visit the refuge this spring (or any time), view wildlife from a distance and give red dogs and their moms the space they need.
